I searched, but I could only find threads that tell me to download from random sites that I don't know. Is there a setting that I can change in order to just use the defragmenter in my computer? I have windows XP. Thanks.

Inde posted a way of doing it. You think she'd lead you to a dodgy site?

Well alright. Though do you know if I have to defragment GW in order for it to work properly? I have been playing for 3 months and so far it has been fine. Do you know on averge how long it would last before it starts to lag?

My GW worked fine when if was perma-fragged.
I couldn't figure out how to defrag it. I used two 3rd party apps (Auslogics and one other one) and they did nothing.
Here's what I did to fix it:
1) uninstall
2) defrag
3) reinstall
4) defrag
5) image
I also have GW all alone on my secondary hard drive now which might have something to do with it.
I noticed a slight decrease in area loading times when I got the game reinstalled/defragged, but it wasn't much.

I use contig and like it and works well and it does work better than Windows Defrager.

3. To defrag GW.dat:
(a) Try contig. Official Microsoft link. (Not dodgey.) COntig uses a "smarter" algorithim than Window's native defragger, so it can sometimes find a way to defrag something the native defragger can't handle.
(b) Delete other stuff off your hard drive, then try again.
(c) Delete GW.dat (or move it to another drive), then defrag everything else, then put GW.dat back on the drive.

Thanks a lot. Though are you sure that this contig is safe to use and won't get me keyloggered or give me a virus? Nowadays, how do you know if something that you find online is safe to use?

It's from Microsoft, it's safe.
I'd say run CCleaner and clean out temp files, then use AusLogic DiskDefrag to defrag further.

if windows defrag will not defrag the .dat file then you do not have enough room on the hard drive for a good defrag. delete some junk or back it up to a disk (cd/dvd) then you'll be g2g.

There are such things as Trusted Sites, and microsoft.com is one of them. You can trust anything from there 100%.
Except Windows. I wouldn't trust that too much.
